Bronze is made by melting two different metals and mixing them. The two metals mixed are copper and tin. Copper, by itself, is too soft to use. Tin is too brittle: it breaks too easily. But if you mix a bit of tin into the copper, it becomes bronze, which is much harder and at the same time, less brittle. This is a good combination for making bronze sculptures.
The most common method for making a bronze sculpture is through the lost-wax casting process. Artists start by crafting a model of their sculpture in clay. They then mould wax on top of it. Another clay layer is added before heating. When the wax melts away, molten bronze is added between the layers of clay. Once the bronze cools, the sculptor chisels away the top clay layer and scrapes the initial clay model away from the inside. To produce large bronze sculptures, artists cast the work in pieces before welding it all together. After the bronze sculpture is finished, it is polished. Corrosive materials and other metals may be added to the surface. This will form a patina.
