How to Ensure Chemical Kiln Operate Efficient

A variety of fuels can be used, including pulverized coal or coke, natural gas, lignite, and fuel oil. These fuels create varying types and amounts of ash, which tend to have compositions similar to some of the aluminosilicate ingredients in the raw mix. Since the ash combines with the raw mix inside the kiln, this must be taken into account in order to correctly predict the cement compassion. There is also an increasing trend to use waste products as part of the fuel, for example old tires. In the best-case scenario, this saves money on fuel, reduces CO2 emissions, and provides a safe method of disposal.

While covering theoretical considerations, the objective of the course is to be practical to cement chemists, process and quality engineers at the factory level. The course will also try answer all the questions regarding clinker quality and kiln operations that have arisen during more than 30 years spent manufacturing cement by the course tutor. Geotechnical properties including plasticity, compaction parameters, unconfined compressive strength (qu), ultrasonic velocities and free swelling of the studied soil were measured before and after the treatment.

The study of basic refractories corrosion by cement kiln materials was carried out with powder tests and coating tests at the typical temperature range of the sintered material in the transition zone and the sintering zone (1200–1450 °C). The tested basic refractories were magnesia-spinel and magnesia–zirconia (MZ) refractory bricks. Chemical analysis of the used cement kiln dust and the lime was conducted. Microstructural changes were examined using scanning electron microscope before and after chemical treatment of the studied soil.

The course will be divided into three modules lasting two weeks each, with all three modules delivered over a continuous six-week period. Each module will explore the theoretical foundations and conclude with discussion of their relevance for current issues in cement manufacturing.
